Wave is inspired by the complex movement of ocean waves and aims to induce an aural sense of tranquility. The composition rises and falls in a transient movement which stimulates in the viewer a sense of relaxation.

DEEP TOUCH

An audio-visual sensorial environment that uses 3D printed objects in the shape of hands which hang in the installation space and are interactive by touch.

DEBRIS - THE DETRITUS OF DIGITAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

This sound installation examines the impact of consumer electronics and digital media as electronic waste (e-waste) in environmental pollution.

Deviations explores generative computational errors and glitches from scratched, corrupted and moldy CDs.

PEDRA FERRO - DATOX

Audiovisual performance and music album that explores the imperceptible electromagnetic radiation generated by electronics and digital technologies as sonic material.

OPEN.CIRCUIT - HOLONAUT

open.circuit is an audiovisual performance created by Assunta Alegiani and Pedro Ferreira that combines improvised sounds, DIY instruments, electronic music, collage and text. In their work they use personal subject matter to build up soundscapes that are in dialogue with the moving images.

Pedro Ferreira

About

Pedro Ferreira, born in 1988, is a multimedia artist, designer and researcher based in Berlin. He holds a PhD degree in fine arts with the specialisation of multimedia art from the University of Lisbon. In his artistic practice he experiments with media materiality and his works range from experimental music and sound art to generative art, audiovisual performance, experimental film, documentary, video art and net art. He is the author of Audiovisual Disruption: Post-Digital Aesthetics in Contemporary Audiovisual Arts (2024).

Artistic Statement

In my artistic practice I engage with media technologies from a material perspective and through hands-on DIY creative approaches as a form of becoming. To me, making art is a way of engaging with and understanding the world that surrounds me. Over the past decade, I have developed a body of works that explores sound and visual relationships using any materials available to me. This means that sometimes I reappropriate analogue film and reuse obsolete media, physical materials, video devices and sound generators. I explore electro-acoustics, digital generative art and computation through creative coding, hacking and making practices. My artistic practice explores media materiality and digital technologies from a critical perspective. It is founded in hybrid media experiments that result in combinations of physical materials, digital media, custom-made software (FLOSS) and hardware assemblages that unfold in physical space. I am particularly interested in critical making practices to engage with digital technologies from a hands-on making perspective infused with critical thinking.

Biography

Pedro Ferreira (born in 1988 in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal) is a multimedia artist based in Berlin, Germany. As a child he started to create short videos and as a teenager he spent his time playing electric guitar, creating web-pages, making graphic design and street art. From 2007-2011, he studied Multimedia at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Portugal, and, from 2011-2013, he pursued a Master’s degree in Multimedia Arts and Culture at the University of Porto, Portugal, with a thesis on experimental film and live cinema performance. From 2018-2022, he studied in a doctoral program in Fine Arts, Multimedia Art, at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, where he researched post-digital aesthetics in audiovisual art, addressing the impacts and effects of digital technologies on daily life, society and the environment. In 2023 he earned his PhD with honors distinction and his thesis Audiovisual Disruption was published in 2024.
